Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
