They're Doing across America What They Performed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, over decades instead of months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you should give them your pullover also.

The evident and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Finest of Us

So I have been heartened to see the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We shall require to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

America is best defended, to put it differently, by relationship to the best about American history, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the worst regarding America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it signifies both humility and conviction, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
