Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
