In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
