The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the judicial center on the end of the week.

The defendant was kept in jail before a additional proceeding on late November.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, outlined Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She said his those affected were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a summer program which he operated.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the minors, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had engaged in this activity with the young males "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She stated the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had suspicions in July 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated items including infant oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She stated the man continued to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the next day.

"The police had not gone out by that stage," she continued.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the events.

Mrs Prior said the youngsters were struggling to walk due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson contacted the law enforcement again.

She said Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
