EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
